Six things we do well.
The work that drives most northern Utah residential and light-commercial permits — handled by a senior P.E. on every project. No outsourcing, no junior handoff, no production-line turnaround that misses the actual question.
Residential
Calcs, plans, and letters for the kinds of projects northern Utah homeowners and small contractors actually run into. Not a production shop. Senior engineer on every job.
Light Commercial
Restaurants, retail, office TI's, warehouses, mezzanines, and change-of-use. We're built for the project that's too small to interest a big firm and too important to hand to a draftsman.
ADUs
Internal, attached, detached, garage conversions. We've worked through HB 82 and most northern Utah city ordinances. Stamped plans that pass plan check the first time.
Foundations & Walls
Cracks, settlement, bowing walls, new footings, and walls over 4 feet. We design for the soils we actually work in — expansive clay on the bench, granular fill in the valley.
Decks & Additions
Snow loads here are not a rounding error. We size beams, ledgers, and headers for what your project will actually see, with the connections plan reviewers want to see.
Inspections & Letters
Pre-purchase visits, foundation crack evaluations, post-storm assessments, and the one-page letters cities, lenders, and buyers ask for. We tell you what we'd tell our family.
The senior engineer is the engineer.
We're an independent licensed practice based in Farmington — not a multi-state shop with thirty engineers and a sales department. When you hire Porter Engineering, you work directly with the licensed professional engineer doing the calculations, drawing the plans, and signing the stamp. Never a junior staff member. Never a draftsman running analysis under someone else's seal.
That model isn't right for every project — large multi- building developments and complex commercial steel are better served by big firms. But for the homeowner with one wall they want to take out, the contractor who needs a stamp on a deck, the small business doing a tenant improvement, or the family adding an ADU, having a real engineer on the other end of the phone (instead of an account manager) is the entire value.
